We all know that vigorous exercise can lead to elevated energy expenditure. But what was not known until now was the effect of exercise on the metabolic rate at resting state, post exercise. A new study, published in the official journal of the American college of sports medicine “Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise” was conducted with the aim of measuring the magnitude and duration of the elevation in resting energy expenditure, in a metabolic chambe, after vigorous exercise.
The study, led by Amy Knab, Karen Corbin et al, selected ten males between the ages of 22 to 33 and asked them to spend two days in metabolic chamber- day 1 was a rest day and day 2 was an exercise day. Their daily activities were strictly matched on both the days in order to remove any discrepancies and to ensure uniformity. On the day of exercise, the subjects were made to undergo a vigorous bout of cycling for 45 min at around 11:00 a.m. The energy expenditure on both the days was accurately mapped and then contrasted. The effect of vigorous exercising on resting metabolic rate after exercise, was measured.
The researchers found that the resting metabolic rate after an intense bout of exercise remained elevated for 14 hours. An energy expenditure of 519 ± 60.9 kcal was seen after cycling vigorously for a period of 45 minutes. The amount of energy expenditure in post exercise period, lasting for a period of 14 hours, was 190 ± 71.4 kcal. This energy expenditure was over and above the energy spent on the resting day. It was observed that the energy expenditure in the post exercise period is directly proportional to the physiologic stress borne by the body during a bout of intense exercise. This post exercise energy expenditure may be important from the aspect of weight loss and management.
